Death threats and reported rifts amongst friends and family have led the happy couple to question whether they are really meant to be together. This latest incident comes after police admit they are no closer to finding Danny Bolan’s killer…

Chloe felt she had read enough. ‘Seriously, Kellie, my ex-husband and I are not on speaking terms. He’s a sneaking, two-timing creep who loves himself more than anything or anyone else!’

Unexpectedly, the other woman laughed. ‘Well, I wasn’t expecting that! My ex is a bastard too. Anyway, it’s all rubbish but all this negative press isn’t helping the endorsements. Lara is going through the roof, but there isn’t any more we can do. The security is so tight, I can hardly leave the room without an escort.’ She sounded strained and exhausted now and Chloe felt a pang of sympathy, despite her earlier annoyance.

‘I’m really sorry, Kellie, but I suppose the trouble is you have so many people around I guess it must be easy to find one dishonest person who doesn’t know the couple very well, and is just out to make some money.’

‘Or even a dishonest person who does know them well!’ Kellie said mock cheerfully. She sounded as though she was regaining control. How odd to have appeased Kellie simply because they both had acrimonious break-ups. Some people were very odd, Chloe thought wryly.

‘What about the bridesmaid who tried to sell the wedding dress story?’ Chloe suggested, remembering Lara’s late-night call.

‘Maisie-Lynn? Little cow,’ Kellie said venomously. ‘Lara is too forgiving. I’m going to have my eyes on that girl from the minute she steps off the plane…’

Chloe let her rattle on, before saying firmly she would see her at the party. She took one more look at the sinister wedding dolls, shivering, before shutting her laptop with a decisive snap. But in her mind’s eye she could still see the blood on the silk dress, mingling with the bride’s hair.

Finn rang just as Chloe was slipping her keys and phone into her purse, ready to head out for the night.

‘I just wanted to make sure you were okay? I was just checking in with an incident report from Palm Bay Hotel after the wedding dress rehearsal. The dolls?’

‘I’m fine thanks, Finn. Everyone was very shocked, but nothing actually happened. I’m just waiting for Peter’s taxi now. It’s the welcome party tonight. I wish you were coming.’ Tired and overwrought, the words were out before she could stop them, and she felt her cheeks burn. She and Finn had always been casual about their developing relationship, keeping it firmly in the friends category. ‘Sorry, I mean…’

He laughed, with no trace of anything but amusement and affection in his voice. ‘I wish I was coming too!’

‘Are you at work?’ Chloe asked, still embarrassed at her blunder, and casting around frantically for something normal to say.

‘I am. Another couple of hours and I think we’ll have a breakthrough, so it will be worth pushing on.’

‘On Danny’s murder?’

‘Possibly. Is your ex giving you any trouble?’ Finn changed the subject.
